The beginning of his journalist career coincided with the Soviet’s invasion into Afghanistan in 1979. He collaborated with editions like Newsweek, Der Spiegel, Liberation, La Repubblica and published his materials about the events in Lebanon, Chad, Nicaragua.
He left Soviet Union being 19-year-old student of second year of Medical Institute. In 1976 he graduated from McGill University of Montreal (Canada), then he worked in Florence (Italy).
From 1988 to 2001 Savik worked at Radio Svoboda Evropa/Radio Svoboda (Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty), from 1996 to 2001 he was the head of Moscow office.
From 2001 to 2004 he was the host of "Svoboda Slova" (Freedom of Speech), "Geroi Dnya" (Hero Of the Day), "Vliyanie" (Influence), "Tretiy Taim" (Third Time) on NTV channel. In 2004 his show “Freedom of Speech” was awarded by Russian TV Academy "TEFI". The same year Savik had become the deputy director of documentation on NTV channel.
From May 2005 Savik was an author and host of “Freedom of Speech” talk-show on ICTV. Later he was an author and presenter of “Freedom by Savik Shuster” show on Inter TV-channel.
Production-studio “Savik Shuster Studio” was created in August 2008. "Ukraine" TV-channel had made a three-year contract with this studio for everyday broadcasting of the social-political talk-show “Shuster Live”.
